It all started because of AP Environmental Science- Dillman got me hooked (ES major #ncsu20 Go Pack!). It was during this class that I realized my deep interest in the environment. After months of nagging me to join Green Team I finally did. It was towards the end of the school year when I joined so I didn’t feel I got the full effect. Nevertheless, I knew I wanted to continue Green Team-ing considering my new found passion for the environment, so, I decided to dive right in and run for VP. I’m certainly glad I did because between Taryn, former president, and I we took the club and ran with it. We had so many ideas and aspirations for the club I don’t think Dillman could keep up. We carried out the traditional fundraisers and beach clean-ups, but we also brought to the table another incredibly successful fundraiser: the first annual Dodgeball Tournament. I will forever remember this tournament for it was extremely stressful on my part, however, it was a blast and totally worth it. We also accomplished another vision, The Pollinator Park. I will be honest I was weary about this project. It was a lot to take on, but our team this year seriously powered through and contributed an immense amount. I didn’t think it was going to come together as amazingly as it did. It just proved how dedicated this group is and I know it will only become stronger. I’m excited to see what the new cabinet puts together next year! I hope everyone continues to leaf their legacy and I hope the next Envirothon team enjoys Dillman’s camping experience…it sure is interesting.

Hi, I’m Chyra Savage and I was the Green Team Secretary for the 2015-2016 school year. I wasn’t apart of the original Green Team but I knew the people who started it. I remember the impact they had on the school when they planted all the new oak trees after the old ones were cut down. I always knew saving the environment was important but the thought of helping the school and the community is what really intrigued me; not to mention the fact that it is advised by one of the best teachers at White Oak, Mr. Dillman.
Green Team is one of the few clubs at White Oak that teaches you how to impact this world in a positive way, while giving you the opportunity to do it. Not only that but it’s fun, we take small trips to clean beaches and parks, we participate in school events to promote our club, we even have parties to celebrate holidays and being green. Green Team gave me a family in the school and I enjoyed every moment of it. Green Team gave me the drive to want to change my community when I left high school. I also experienced things I wouldn’t have if I hadn’t joined. I plan on taking all those memories with me into the future. I plan to go to NC State and major in engineering, hopefully computer or computer science. Although, that has nothing to do with the environment directly, the skills I have learned while apart of Green Team will always stick with me. I challenge those of you to carry on the legacy of Green Team and continue impacting those around you. Try going even farther into the community have a Green Day in Jacksonville, you never know the possibilities. If you want something done you have to be willing to go out and do it. I’m learning that now as I prepare to leave for college. Good Luck future Green Teamers and may you LEAF YOUR LEGACY!! |
My time in white oak high school green team may have been short lived but it truly showed me how fast you can bond with a group. Green team is a family that excepted me with open arms and will do the same to any other Viking. Activities like beach cleanups, yard sales and school remodeling projects helped bring the team closer together while improving the environment. I truly believe without the green team I would have less knowledge about how to conserve resources and less knowledge about how my life affects the world around me. From how to lessen my carbon foot print to bonding with my fellow Vikings green team has forever changed me.
